Introduction

I studied Ethnomusicology in Ghana for the summer of 2013.

Why would I choose to venture to this area of the world to study music and culture especially when I'm a biological science major? The University of Alberta offered an incredible opportunity to see this area of West Africa and allowed us to observe how music can be such a significant part of life.  Perhaps, due to having a bias towards the field of science, I wondered, how significant could music possibly to be to one person? To a community? To a country? I spent 7 weeks living and breathing the answer to those questions.

On June 27th, I had arrived.
